Abstract

Introduction. Hydrotherapy in pain relief during childbirth is very widespread among maternity centers around the world, and many centers have an obstetric bathtub in their delivery rooms; offered by obstetric-gynecological nurses who are responsible for this type of care. Currently their mother and child outcomes are still under discussion.
Objective. Describe different parameters or maternal, newborn and childbirth outcomes with the use of hydrotherapy, and analyze the progress of dilation during delivery.
Population and methods. Descriptive cross-sectional study in a study population of 109 pregnant women, from the Birth Unit of the Hospital of Úbeda (Spain), between 2014 and 2015. A descriptive analysis was performed and the non-parametric Wilcoxon test was used, as was the diagram of boxes and mustaches.
Results. No harmful effects were detected on the maternal, newborn and birth parameters; and no stagnation of it was observed, significantly.
Conclusions. Hydrotherapy during childbirth can be a safe alternative in the care offered by the nurse; and should not be limited to a certain period, indicating according to the woman's own desire.
