Abstract

Over the past eight years, approximately 4,500 cancer patients have been treated at the Infanta Sofía University Hospital (HUIS) as nurse referents.

The HUIS advanced practice oncology nurse has the ability to detect, prevent, and respond to patient needs, in collaboration and coordination with other services and social and healthcare settings, ensuring comprehensive, integrated, and efficient care to improve quality of life and the efficient use of resources.

Supervises, investigates, manages, and leads patient care, ensuring its continuity.

Promotes health education for patients and their families.

Provides training sessions to nursing staff.

The vast majority of patients required management tasks to accommodate therapeutic and diagnostic testing.

Unscheduled care (both by phone and in person) has prevented patients from having to visit the emergency department or have to make an extra oncology appointment.

Patients and their families are grateful for this work every day.
