Abstract

Introduction

The term 'bed management' might initially suggest something structural, but in fact, it is linked to a complex system for handling hospital admissions.

The entire strategy involved in the bed allocation process remains completely hidden to the patient, not only the concept itself but also the lack of awareness that this process depends on nurses, who as the first caregivers, assign the most appropiate location based on the patient’s needs.

Objectives

To assess patient satisfaction with the Bed Management Unit, to analyze patients’ awareness and understanding of its functions, and to identify potential areas for improvement in its functioning.

Methodology

A prospective, descriptive, observational study was conducted, including adult patients admitted with scheduled admissions. Data were collected using a self-designed survey accessible via a QR code.

Results

85% of patients did not experience any delay in bed assignment. 86% remained in the same room throughout their hospital stay, and among those who were transferred, 66% reported an improvement in their accommodation. More than 83% of respondents were unaware of the existence of the Bed Management Department and that it is staffed by nurses. 93% rated their satisfaction with the bed assignment process as excellent or good.

Discussion

Although the level of satisfaction collected has been very positive overall, it is necessary to promote greater interaction between our department and patients, so that the role of the Bed Management Nurse becomes more visible and patients become involved in the administrative process of hospitalization.
