Towards a Healthy University: pilot study of global health of the students from Camilo José Cela University during the academic year 2016-2017

At present, health understood as an asset to achieve well-being, transcends the absence of disease or control of risk factors. Political, economic, social, cultural, environmental, behavioral and biological determinants may favor or affect health. This work is based on the original proposal of PhD. Arantxa Santa-María, Araceli García and Concepción Martín in 2015 to calculate the so-called "Global Human Health Indicator" (GHHI), which was configured in 6 areas, following the M. Whitehead and R. Dalhgren Health Determinants Model (1991). The objective is to assess the health of the students of the Health School of Camilo José Cela University (UCJC) through the GHHI, as a preliminary step to take actions to promote university health. The study was carried out on a sample of 73 students from the four grades of Health (Nursing, Psychology, Physiotherapy and Physical Activity and Sport Sciences) in 2017. The questionnaire, consisting of a series of 11 validated tests and 6 elaborated ad hoc tests (evaluating the different determinants of health), was administered during school hours. The mean (SD) of the summary value (GHHI) has risen to 86.03 (6.64) points over 100, with a maximum of 99.30 and a minimum of 65.35 points. Most of the tests have given results in the healthy range. The Epworth Daytime Sleepiness Scale (ESS), integrated in Area 3 of the GHHI questionnaire, has detected that 40% of men and 57.89% of women of the sample suffer from pathological or excessive daytime sleepiness. The main limitation lies in the reduced size of the sample and its high homogeneity; it is recommended to continue testing this tool with a larger and more diverse population.
